Morrissey
The outspoken former lead singer of Manchester legends The Smiths - arguably the most important indie band in Britain during the '80s - Stephen Patrick Morrissey has enjoyed a successful solo career, since 1988, with his theatrical crooning and literate, poetic lyrics - filled with romantic angst, social alienation, and cutting wit - delivering him 15 UK Top 10 albums, three of which topped the charts.
His Top 10 solo hits include "Irish Blood, English Heart", "You Have Killed Me", "Suedehead", "First of the Gang to Die", "The Last of the Famous International Playboys", "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get", "Let Me Kiss You", "Everyday Is Like Sunday", "Interesting Drug" and "I Have Forgiven Jesus".
One of the most intriguing figures in alternative rock, his increasingly controversial views on Brexit, immigration, race and support for the far right-wing political party For Britain and the convicted racist Tommy Robinson has alienated him further from his former bandmates and many of his original working class, socialist-leaning fans, with protests organised by former Hacienda DJ Dave Haslam leading to the cancellation of his 2018 tour.
