GRITTY GAZE - PLACEBO
NAUGHTY CORNER RECOMMENDS
After two successful events already this year, the season launch party and the hugely well-received Creative Corner Festival in partnership with the Epstein Theatre resident theatre company Naughty Corner Productions is proud to present Naughty Corner Recommends: three nights showcasing three outstanding shows from exceptional companies and performers, all handpicked and bearing our seal of approval.
NAUGHTY CORNER RECOMMENDS: GRITTY GAZE - PLACEBO
Liverpool Born, Fringe tested and Epstein Ready. PLACEBO comes home.
Liverpool based theatre company Gritty Gaze brings home PLACEBO to the Epstein Theatre for a one night only performance on the 21st July.
Following a 4 star run at the Edinburgh Fringe and recognised as the first ever winners of The Space UK Scheme (2024), PLACEBO marks a major moment for the company, bringing a Liverpool born production from intimate beginnings to one of the cit?s most iconic stages.
Written by Tyler Kane and co-directed by Joel Cousins& Tyler Kane, PLACEBO has been described by accreditations such as Binge Fringe Magazine as ?Impossible not to lap up.? Bold, surreal and unapologetically queer, PLACEBO fuses a raw working class lens and unapologetically queer storytelling with striking visual imagination.
A fever dream of power, pills, and the cost of leaving. PLACEBO is a night of sweat scrapyard spectres, and scalding humour.
The play follows OWEN and HOARDER, two unlikely survivors bound together in the aftermath of collapse by necessity, dependency and something far harder to name. As their routine begins to fracture, the pills wear off and paranoia seeps in, the line between care and control splinters beyond repair.
Blurring the boundaries between psychological thriller and surreal spectacle, the production fuses physical theatre, striking design and uncanny imagery-including a full scale puppet built of scavenged debris to create a world that is both intimate and deeply unsettling.
Gritty Gaze is a Liverpool based theatre company championing bold, queer, and alternative new age voices. Their work merges raw, real world grit with surreal cinematic design creating immersive visually daring theatre that places outsiders, the strange and the eccentric firmly at the centre.
With PLACEBO the company continues it?s mission to redefine what queer theatre can look and feel like, fierce, imaginative and unapologetically alive.
Featuring: Corey Hudson as Owen, Ewan Schooler as Hoarder, Sadie Kennedy as Zo, Enya Morrin as Gongle, Jame?s O?Neil as Ensemble, L?cia Grilo as Ensemble and Scott Sanderson as Ensemble.
With Just a single performance at The Epstein Theatre, PLACEBO is set to be a must see event for Liverpool's theatre community, emerging creatives and audiences seeking bold new work.
