Sananda Maitreya (Terence Trent D'Arby)

New York pop soul singer Sananda Maitreya (born Terence Trent Howard), started his career with the stage name Terence Trent D'Arby (adapting his stepfather's surname of Darby).

He found fame in 1987 with the 5 x Platinum chart-topping album "Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby" which featured the smash hits "Sign Your Name", "Wishing Well", "If You Let Me Stay",and "Dance Little Sister", before going on to score UK Top 20 singles "Do You Love Me Like You Say?", "Delicate" (featuring Des'ree), "She Kissed Me", "Let Her Down Easy" and "Holding On to You" in the 1990s.

After his 2001 album "Wildcard" failed to score success, he legally changed his name to Sananda Maitreya, explaining "Terence Trent D'Arby was dead... he watched his suffering as he died a noble death. After intense pain I meditated for a new spirit, a new will, a new identity".

Maitreya is a multi-instrumentalist and noted for his soulful voice and flamboyant, charismatic and androgynous persona.
