Born and raised in Islington, she grew up a shy child of Nigerian heritage who discovered her love of singing at St Mary’s Youth Club, which artists like Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke had also attended, yet her music is hardly aiming simply for the pop charts; rather, it is turbo charged with the kind of fury and potency, confusion and anxiety that make up the modern experience of being Black, British and female at this particular point in time.
