Kathryn Tickell & Amy Thatcher
Kathryn Tickell first took up the Northumbrian smallpipes at the age of nine, inspired by her family and by the music of an older generation of traditional musicians. Landscape, weather and the stories of the people that lived and worked in rural Northumberland were part of her childhood. Kathryn’s personal evocation of this is heard through the music she has taken to stages all over the world.
Amy Thatcher is one of the UK’s leading folk accordionists. Her musical roots are in Stockport’s Fosbrook Folk Education Trust, where she trained from the age of eight on accordion, fiddle, piano and clog dancing. The Traditional Music degree course at Newcastle University took her to the north east where she subsequently joined The Shee, The Monster Ceilidh Band and Kathryn’s ensembles The Side and The Darkening.
